Quick summary
Choose a family beach day, youth paddle lesson, cycling outing or museum visit. Match the activity to your child's age and confidence rather than packing in too much.
1. Build a beach day around their interests
For younger children, play space and an easy place to pause can matter more than scenery. Teenagers may prefer swimming, a game or time with friends. Consider Gyro Beach, City Park or Tugboat Bay, then check the facilities at your chosen beach.
2. Learn to paddle together
Our Kids & Youth Paddle Board Lessons are for ages 8 to 15, with a parent participating alongside their child. Youth must have swimming experience and bring their own properly fitted youth PFD. The lesson is not suitable for non-swimmers.
Older teenagers can look at our regular beginner lesson. Check participant options before booking, especially for a family with mixed ages.
3. Give teenagers a cycling outing
Myra Canyon is an option for families who enjoy cycling and scenery. It is a separate trip from the downtown waterfront, so allow for the drive, equipment and time on the trail. Check current conditions and rental availability before committing.
4. Keep an indoor option ready
The Okanagan Heritage Museum gives you a change of pace when beach weather does not cooperate. Let the family choose a question or subject to explore instead of treating the visit like another school assignment.
5. Give them a say in the day
Ask everyone to pick one thing: an activity, a meal or a stop. A teenager who chooses the outing is more likely to enjoy it than one dragged through an adult itinerary.
Family planning checklist
- Check ages and swimming requirements for water bookings.
- Bring water, sun protection and dry clothes.
- Leave time for meals and breaks.
