Quick Summary
SUPCove's youth lessons are for ages 8 to 15, with one parent or guardian included. Youth need previous swimming experience and their own properly fitted youth PFD. Choose a lesson before an independent rental if your family is new to paddling.
A family paddle goes more smoothly when the adults know what's required before arriving. Choose for your child's age, confidence in water and ability to follow directions rather than trying to fit everyone into the same outing.
1. Choose an Age-Appropriate Lesson
Our Kids & Youth Learn to Paddle Experience is designed for ages 8 to 15. One parent or guardian can participate alongside their child, with their own board and equipment.
The lesson covers equipment, balance, paddling, stopping, turning and what to do if you fall in. Standing isn't required immediately. The aim is to build confidence at a suitable pace.
2. Bring Your Child's Own PFD
Parents must supply a correctly fitted youth life jacket or PFD. SUPCove currently carries adult-sized life jackets, not youth-sized PFDs for this lesson.
Check the fit before the booking. A youth participant without an appropriate PFD cannot join the activity, and the product page explains the cancellation implications. Don't leave this check until you're at the beach.
3. Check Swimming and Participation Requirements
Youth must have previous swimming experience and be comfortable around water. This activity is not suitable for non-swimmers, and wearing a PFD doesn't replace that requirement.
Your child must also be able to remain with the group and consistently follow safety directions. Contact us ahead of time if individual attention or a quieter setting would help. A private option may be more appropriate.
4. Keep the Day Manageable
Bring water, sun protection, towels and a change of clothes. Arrive ready to listen, with enough time to get organised. Our paddle boarding checklist helps with the general packing.
If the adults are also new, a regular beginner lesson is available for participants outside the youth age range. Ask us how to plan bookings that suit your family.
5. Rent When You're Ready to Paddle Independently
A rental offers flexibility once your family has the necessary skills and safety equipment. It doesn't include the same instruction as a lesson. Compare renting and buying a board if you're deciding whether paddling will become a regular family activity.
