Quick Summary
No, you should not drink alcohol while paddle boarding on an ordinary Kelowna lake outing. A paddle board does not meet BC's private-vessel exception for consuming or possessing open liquor. Keep paddling alcohol-free and leave drinks until all water activities are finished.
A beer on a paddle board may look like a holiday idea, but an ordinary SUP outing on Okanagan Lake does not qualify for the exception described in BC's boating liquor rules.
1. Why a Paddle Board Doesn't Qualify
The BC RCMP's boating alcohol guidance explains that private boats generally cannot be used for drinking or possessing open liquor unless they meet specific requirements. The private-vessel exception involves restricted public access plus permanent sleeping accommodation, cooking facilities and a toilet.
A paddle board has none of those facilities. Being on the lake, sitting down or stopping your paddle does not make an ordinary SUP qualify. The RCMP also identifies separately licensed or permitted vessels, which is not the situation for a normal paddle board rental.
2. Open Liquor and Impairment Are Different Issues
Don't assume that staying below a driving alcohol limit makes an open drink on your board permitted. Rules about consuming or possessing open liquor are separate from impaired operation.
Operating a vessel while impaired is illegal. Human-powered paddling is not a reason to treat alcohol as compatible with the activity.
3. Don't Drink Before You Paddle
Parks Canada's SUP safety guidance advises avoiding alcohol and cannabis before or during swimming or boating. Wear a properly fitted PFD, paddle with company and make a plan for returning to shore.
Bring drinking water instead. Leave any alcohol until the boards are packed away, swimming is finished and you're in a place where drinking is permitted. Don't assume a beach or park allows it; check the local rules and posted restrictions.
4. Put the Paddle First in a Party Itinerary
For a bachelor, bachelorette or birthday outing, schedule the water activity before any drinking plans. Our Kelowna group celebration guide explains the hosted and independent options.
If learning is the priority, choose a beginner SUP lesson. An alcohol-free paddle can still be the fun part of your day.
